Change your name with utility companies (Gas, Electricity & Water) – UK
After you change your name by deed poll, you should update your household bills so your account name matches your new legal name. MoneyHelper notes you’ll need to tell a range of organisations, including utility companies, because nothing updates automatically.
Utilities aren’t legal bodies, so each provider has its own process (online account profile, web form, phone or email). The goal is simple: change the account holder name and keep your billing correct.
What you’ll need
-
Your account number / customer reference (from your bill or online account)
-
Your address and the name currently on the bill
-
Your new name exactly as you’re using it
-
Your deed poll (only if the provider asks for evidence)
-
Optional: a recent meter reading (helps if anything goes wrong)
Step-by-step: update your utilities
1) Gas & Electricity
-
Log into your supplier’s online account and look for Profile / Personal details / Account holder name.
-
If there’s no online option, contact support and ask for a name change on the account.
-
Update the name across any linked services (paperless billing, app login, contact email/phone).
-
Save confirmation (email/screenshot) and check your next bill.
If you don’t know your electricity supplier: Ofgem explains you can use the Energy Networks Association tool (postcode) and then contact your local network operator to get supplier details.
Citizens Advice also explains how to find your supplier if you’re unsure.
2) Water
-
Log into your water company online account (if you have one) and look for My profile / Change name.
-
If there’s no online option, contact the water company and request a name update.
(Example: water companies often offer online profile changes or customer support routes for name changes. )
3) Other household bills (optional, but recommended)
Once utilities are updated, do the same for:
-
broadband / mobile
-
TV licence / streaming services
-
home insurance
-
any home services you pay monthly (alarm, monitoring, etc.)
What if the supplier refuses or delays?
-
Ask what specific evidence they need (and whether a scan/photo is acceptable).
-
Ask for the request to be handled by a supervisor or billing/accounts team.
-
If the account is joint, ask whether they need consent from the other account holder.
-
If the company has a complaints process, use it and keep everything in writing.
