Change your name for Council Tax (UK)
If you’ve changed your name by deed poll, you should update your Council Tax account so your bills and correspondence match your new legal name. Each council has its own process (usually an online “change of circumstances / change name” form).
What you’ll need
-
Your Council Tax reference / account number (usually on your bill or council tax account)
-
Your address and the name(s) currently on the bill
-
Your new name exactly as you’re using it
-
Your deed poll (only if your council requests evidence)
Find your local council website: use GOV.UK “Find your local council” if needed.
Step-by-step: updating your name for Council Tax
-
Go to your council’s Council Tax “change of circumstances / change name” page. Many councils provide a form specifically for correcting or changing the name on the bill.
-
Enter your Council Tax reference number and property address.
-
Select “Change name / name correction” (wording varies) and enter your new name exactly.
-
Upload or provide evidence only if asked (some councils request proof; others don’t).
-
Save confirmation (screenshot/email) and check your next bill shows the updated name.
Important: Tell the council promptly after changes — some councils state you must notify them immediately when name/contact details change.
Moving house (quick note)
If you’ve moved recently, use your council’s change of address process instead of (or as well as) name change, as councils treat moves differently.
What if the council refuses or delays?
-
Ask exactly what they require (e.g., deed poll evidence, identity, or clarification of who is liable).
-
Request it be handled by the Council Tax / Revenues team (or a supervisor).
-
If it still isn’t resolved, use the council’s formal complaints process (every council has one).
