Change your name with HMRC (UK)

If you’ve changed your name by deed poll, you should update HMRC so your tax records match your new legal name. This helps keep PAYE, Self Assessment, and access to your tax account correct. HMRC explains you need to tell them when your name changes and you can do this online or using the HMRC app. GOV.UK

What you’ll need

  • Your National Insurance number (helpful for matching records)

  • Your Government Gateway ID or GOV.UK One Login details (to sign in)

  • Your deed poll (keep it available in case HMRC asks for evidence)

Step-by-step: updating HMRC

1. Sign in and report your name change
HMRC provides an online service to tell them your name has changed (you’ll need to sign in / create sign-in details).

2. Update via the HMRC app (optional)
HMRC also says you can tell them your name has changed using the HMRC app.

3. Check your records after the update
Once updated, check your personal details show the correct name in your HMRC account/app.

4. PAYE note (if employed)
Your employer updates PAYE through payroll, but it’s still sensible to make sure your HMRC personal record reflects your new name too.

Self Assessment (if you file a tax return)

HMRC notes that if you submit a Self Assessment tax return, your details are updated once you’ve reported a name or address change.

If HMRC asks you for evidence (important)

Only send evidence if HMRC specifically asks you to. HMRC has an online process for sending evidence of personal details when requested, and it explains what documents they accept and how to send them (including posting to HMRC if you cannot do it online).

Why this matters (quick reassurance)

MoneyHelper notes that once you’ve told HMRC about a name change, HMRC will update DWP and your National Insurance details.
